Friction shifters are the most reliable way to change gears, bar none, and these are the most advanced there's ever been. Dia-Compe use an evolution of SunTour's (minute of silence...) Power Ratchet system for nearly effortless shifts.
The mold for these levers is the modern "Silver" style designed by Rivendell.
These will fit all road handlebars and other specialized alt-bars specifically designed to take bar-end shifters.
