Friction shifters are the most reliable way to change gears, bar none, and these are the most advanced there's ever been. Dia-Compe use an evolution of SunTour's (minute of silence...) Power Ratchet system for nearly effortless shifts.
The mold for these levers is the modern "Silver" style designed by Rivendell.
The downtube bolt-on version are probably the lightest shifting system you'll be able to find on the market today. Attach them to any frame with "Shimano-style" downtube bosses (including all modern frames with downtube bosses).
