During the winter, when the shop is less hectic, we offer in-person classes on basic and intermediate bicycle maintenance.
Here's the format: a small group while the shop is closed, under one of our head mechanics. We'll have classes in English and in French, in separate groups. Bring your own bicycle, that way you can practice the elements that are most relevant to you, though you'll also learn other skills.
Flat repairs (2h)
This class is for cyclists who wish to lean to fix their own flats, either at home or on the side of the road. It is also a good introductory class for those who want to get into bicycle mechanics.
Contents:
- Understanding tires and inner tubes sizes
- Repairing a flat
- Replacing a tire
- Tire pressure
- Checking tire wear
The class is on a Thursday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm, at our shop on Rachel (978 Rachel E). Bring your bike and clothes you won’t mind getting dirty. Max 4 students per class.
Mechanics - Level 1 (7h)
This class is for cyclists who wish to become more independent in doing basic maintenance on their bicycle. We will cover most adjustments and repairs that are regularly necessary to ensure your bike is safe and functional.
Contents:
- Understanding tire and inner tube sizes
- Repairing a flat and replacing a tire
- The different types of brakes
- Brake adjustment
- Derailleur adjustment
- Cleaning and lubricating the drivetrain
Hydraulic brakes and electronic drivetrains are not covered in this class.
The class is on a Sunday from 9am to 5pm, with one hour for lunch, at our shop on Rachel (978 Rachel E). Bring your bike and clothes you won’t mind getting dirty. Max 4 students per class
Mechanics - Level 2 (7h)
This class is for cyclists who want to deepen their understanding and knowledge of bicycle mechanics and reach a greater level of autonomy. We will cover adjustments and repairs that are more complex but still regularly necessary. You don't need to have taken Level 1 but you do need to be experienced with everything covered in that section.
Contents:
- Check brake components wear
- Replacement of brake parts
- Check drivetrain components wear
- Replacement of drivetrain parts
- Bearings and adjustments
- Wheel truing
- Checking wheel wear
Hydraulic brakes and electronic drivetrains are not covered in this class.
Wheelbuilding (9h)
This class is for anyone who wishes to learn to lace wheels by themselves, starting from the selection of the components to the final adjustments. While having a minimum of experience with bike mechanics can help, this class is suitable for beginners as well as for experienced mechanics.
Contents:
- Selection of components
- Spoke length calculation
- Types of lacing patterns
- Tensioning
The goal of the class is that participants get to take home a pair of hand-laced wheels at the end. You can provide your own components or buy new components for the class. The cost of the class doesn’t cover the costs of the new components bought for the wheels laced in the class. If none of these options are possible, we can provide components and the wheels laced with them will be used by the shop.
The class is on Sunday from 9am to 6pm, with one hour for lunch, at our shop on Rachel (978 Rachel E)
Max 4 people per class
