Studded tires are the best way to stay upright and safe in the winter, and don't let anyone tell you otherwise. This is a new offering this year, so no first-hand ice riding testimonials, but Continental know tires, so they'll be good. Choose your width, and how many spikes you want: 120 (2-row) is good enough for most people, but 240 (4-row) is the most un-slippable there can be.

Ride, turn, and brake gently for the first couple of hours with these, to let the studs bed in to the rubber. And yes, you can ride just fine on pavement, you won't slip.
