Sure, you can take your 90s MTB, dad's Japanese 1980s tourer, or modern hybrid on tour, they'll do great and you'll have fun! But if you're in the market for a new bike, modern touring or bikepacking specific models will check a few more boxes than those. Clearance for wider tires is super helpful to be able to tackle a variety of terrain. Having more eyelets than any older frame will allow you to attach racks, cargo cages, water, lash drybags, and more. But one thing that new (good) touring bikes will have in common with those other models: Steel is Real! Chromoly steel frames are both strong and lightweight, can be repaired with a rudimentary welding setup in a pinch, and are much more comfortable in their ability to absorb road vibration.
