Randonneuring is a bit of a niche segment of bicycle activity - it consists in riding (unreasonably) long distances, usually more than 200km and up to 1200km. Rides are organized and require riders register at predetermined checkpoints (or controls). These aren't races, and are more about completion than speed, but are nonetheless sporty and difficult endeavours. Randonneuring bikes need a couple key features: the ability to attach a small front rack that'll support a bag that's accessible while riding for food, maps, and extra layers; a lightweight steel construction that'll be reliable and comfortable over hundreds of kilometers; and provisions for dynamo lighting, since the longer of these rides will inevitably take place after sundown.
