If you've ridden a ten-speed from the 70s or earlier, you know what I mean. Shifting nowadays is buttery-smooth when everything is well set-up with good cables, and for that the derailer, cassette and chain had to be designed together to enable indexed shifting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat said, derailers are now \u003cem\u003eso\u003c\/em\u003e good that you can fudge things like compatibility in surprising ways, and you'll benefit from the improvements even if you're using old-school friction shifters.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIn general, if you don't want the deep dive on matching indexing:\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e5\/6 speed derailers won't really index well\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e7-8-9-speed derailers can index their own speed and all lower ones, it's the shifter and cogs that need to match\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e10-speed and up, match all the parts together, or write to us for advice before trying to get weird with it, we have experience with mixing this stuff\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOtherwise the main difference in derailers will be cage length, which affects how much chain it can take up. The result is a chain that is too loose or too tight. The Melvin takes care of the chain tension and lets you run a single speed wheel on almost any frame with a derailleur hanger, including BOOST and Fat Bikes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Melvin uses two pulleys, just like a rear derailleur, which gives it 20 teeth of chain wrap. This means that the Melvin will work with multiple front chain rings while maintaining proper chain tension. Of course this is no longer a true single speed, but can come in handy when two or three gears are all you need. Twenty teeth of chain wrap means that chain rings with a maximum difference of twenty teeth can be used up front.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe mounting pivot has spacers that can be arranged to adjust the chainline. The Melvin works best, of course, with Paul hubs, but the chainline spacers allow it to work with most other hubs too. In addition to the pivot spacers, the pulleys have side to side float to quiet slight variances in chainline.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe pulleys are made of extruded and machined aluminum and have sealed bearings for durability. They are 2.25mm thick at the tooth which fits inside most narrow 6 through 9 speed chains, and the pulley cage is wide enough to allow 1\/8″ single speed chains as well. Chain tension is optimized when the chain length is cut so that the pulleys are aligned vertically. For 1\/8″ cogs we recommend the silver SRAM PC-1 chain. For 3\/32″ cogs we recommend any 8 speed chain. If you are having problems with skipping and are using a Surly cog, try another cog before contacting us.
